Cincinnati Chili
Cocoa, cinnamon, & other spices, oh my!
- 1 large onion, chopped (or 1 tsp onion powder, or save the chopped onion as a topping, however you like)
- 1 lb extra-lean ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 clove garlic (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
- 1 tbs chili powder
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp red (cayenne) pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 (15 oz) can of tomato sauce
- 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbs cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- Cooked spaghetti (or whatever you want to have your chili on!)
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Any other chili type toppings you like
- In a large frying pan (or sauce pan) saute onion, beef, garlic and chili powder until beef is slightly cooked.
- Add allspice, cinnamon, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, cocoa, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, cider vinegar, and water. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered for 1 – 1.5 hrs. (you don’t want it too soupy).
- Ladle over spaghetti and top with cheese and/or anything else you prefer. I also like it on hotdogs w/ cheese!
