Cincinnati Chili

Cocoa, cinnamon, & other spices, oh my!

  • 1 large onion, chopped (or 1 tsp onion powder, or save the chopped onion as a topping, however you like)
  • 1 lb extra-lean ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 clove garlic (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1 tbs chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp red (cayenne) pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 (15 oz) can of tomato sauce
  • 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbs cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Cooked spaghetti (or whatever you want to have your chili on!)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Any other chili type toppings you like
  1. In a large frying pan (or sauce pan) saute onion, beef, garlic and chili powder until beef is slightly cooked.
  2. Add allspice, cinnamon, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, cocoa, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, cider vinegar, and water. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered for 1 – 1.5 hrs. (you don’t want it too soupy).
  3. Ladle over spaghetti and top with cheese and/or anything else you prefer. I also like it on hotdogs w/ cheese!
